wrapping up

These last few weeks have been finishing up lots of projects.
Some classes are finishing their pottery, some are finishing their landscapes.
I hope to have everyone caught up soon, so we can start a new unit on Georgia O'Keefe.

Monochromatic

Second graders are working on making tints and shades of a color.
Students started out by choosing one the primary  colors. Next they added white to create tints and black to create shades. Students tried to get as many different values as they could. The next week, we cut shapes out of the painted paper and glued them onto a colored background.
Mono means one, chroma means color. A monochromatic painting is created using different values of one color.

Clay !

Over the next month or two each class will get a chance to create something out of clay.
With the help of volunteers, Mrs. Deci's class and Mr. White's class started theirs today.
Kindergarten students are making pinch pots.
First graders are making slab fish.
Second graders are making coil pots.
The pots will air dry for one week, then go into the kiln. Next we'll brush on glazes. It's a special way to add color just for pottery. Then those pots have to go back into the kiln again. The glaze melts into a smooth, shiny, colorful outer coating.
The first graders are painting their fish.
Then they can finally go home.

Congratulations, Mrs. Frey's Class !

Mrs. Frey's class was the first to earn a free art class. Students chose to paint, draw, create sculptures, use the computers, use building blocks, make puzzles, collages, write letters, read books, etc.
It was their day to use anything in the art room and they earned it by being kind, safe and responsible for ten classes.

What happened to December ?

December seemed to zip by. We were very busy and when class was over I realized I hadn't taken any photos. First and second graders finished their paintings in the style of Dahlov Ipcar.
Second grade brought home their sketchbooks. I hope they continue to draw in them and shared them with family & friends.
Our focus in January will be on symmetry; line symmetry, radial (or rotational ) symmetry and hexagonal symmetry.
Once again our Monday Art classes will miss out because of holidays.

More nature drawings

First and Second Graders are drawing rocks this week. We decided a rock can be any shape. They certainly come in a lot of different shapes. Some have a lot of texture. Some have stripes. A rock may look gray, brown or black, but when we look closer their are a lot of different shades of colors.
